Argaty Red kites
Red kites were actually extinct in Scotland from as far back as the 19th century, this was mainly because they were being persecuted by sporting estates, taxidermy and egg collecting, before this red kites were seen quite often and one of our main raptors.
.
In 1996 the first 19 red kites were released in central Scotland and they actually first nested in 1998 and five young fledged. Now it is believed the number of breeding pairs are over a thousand.
.
One of the best places to see these beautiful birds of prey is at the Argaty Red Kites hides near the village of Doune. Everyday at certain times in the afternoon the farm owners puts out feed for these majestic birds and even though they are wild you soon see them perched on trees or circling high in the skies above and when it looks safe they produce an incredible show as they swoop down, grab a scrap of meat and then eat it in flight. It is a fascinating display where you will capture some amazing photographic shots. It is a working farm so it is advisable to give them a ring before you go.
