Richard was born in 1964 at Fordingbridge in Hampshire, and graduated in Art History at York University in 1986. In 1988 he moved to Glasgow where he became established as a figurative painter, exhibiting at galleries and art fairs throughout the UK and Ireland. From 2006 he had a series ofsuccessful solo shows, including Museum Pieces, which opened in Glasgow's Kelvingrove Museum. His move to West Sussex in 2010 brought major ecclesiastical commissions and a revival of his interest in Landscape painting.
His figurative work conducts a dialogue between past and present, combining elements from works of art of the past with contemporary figures. In his landscape paintings he tries to capture the unique character of a place seen in fleeting moments of magical light and atmospehere. A recent development combines figurative and landscape elements, placing contemporary figures in the context of the natural world.
