    Melanie Barrett

I studied my degree in Fine Art at the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, and my MA in Painting at Wimbledon School of Art in 2004. Since then I have continued to paint in both oils and watercolours.
I am inspired by the landscape of the North East, with its historical industrial urban characteristics contrasting with the beauty of the surrounding countryside. My paintings are often inspired by contrasts, both regarding the subjects within my work and the more formal light and shadows in a scene. Photography informs my work to a large extent, I use it to frame compositions and collect primary visual information from which to build my paintings.
I have exhibited in various venues in London, Durham and Newcastle, including the London art Fair 2005, Discerning Eye Exhibition 2004, and County Durham Spring Art Shows 2011, 2012 and 2013.
